Beginners Group

We run an annual beginners course, usually starting in April.

UPDATE: The Beginner’s Course for 2024 is now CLOSED

What is it?

A 12-week course, running on Tuesday evenings.  The aim is simply to help you progress from your current level, and help you to do that comfortably.

Who is it aimed at?

We target the beginners course at a wide range of runners, from complete beginners, to those who have maybe been out of running for a couple of years or more. Whatever your background, we cater for you.

What is the goal of the course?

We try to coincide the end of the course, with a local event, such as the Leeds 10k. This is something we use as a target, as by the end of the 12 weeks, you should be able to comfortably run or run/walk 10k.

How will you help me achieve this?

Throughout the course, there will be qualified run leaders (known as LIRFs) and also other helpers from the club. These volunteers will ensure that you’re kept safe throughout the run, and that nobody is ever left behind. We’re all there not only to get fitter, but for fun, so we make sure that the course pushes you, while remaining enjoyable and sociable.

What happens after the course?

We organise a Beginner’s Graduation event on the last week of the course.  This normally involves a fun social evening, including food and drinks in a pub local to Garforth. This not only celebrates your achievement, but also introduces you to the rest of the club. At this point we hope you will choose to join us as a full member, which you can do by clicking here. Should you choose to join as a full member, you will receive a discount on your full club membership.

How much will it cost?

The course costs a one off fee of £25.

What did previous beginners say?

We asked previous year’s beginners to tell us what they thought about the course:

“So helpful, welcoming and supportive. It didn’t matter what pace you were running at.  There was always somebody who would stay with you and encourage you.”

“The support of the club members was incredible”

“Thank you to everyone involved.  The graduation was such a lovely thing to do”

“Massive thank you.  You have inspired me!”
